Not a great birthday party spot

My son had his birthday 'party' here with four of his friends. We used the whole 2 hours ($100) for rock climbing. All of the staff were really great with the boys, _except_ for their 'instructor.' He really did not instruct them at all. He basically just stood there belaying, and offered no advice to them on how to climb or anything. He did manage to shout advice to other nearby climbers however, which further confused the boys. Once I started yelling encouragement and advice (and I know nothing about rock climbing), he finally engaged, but by then our time was up. The boys were well behaved, so I'm not sure what his problem was, but he missed an opportunity to gain future rock-climbing customers.
No Alternative

Based on the other reviews we had high expectations for VBRG. Unfortunately, having lived in San Diego where there is great Indoor (e.g. Solid Rock) and Outdoor climbing close by we were a bit disappointed. The gym was not all that clean--the couches were fairly repulsive, the ropes were old and swollen (our hands were black by the time we finished), and the place was really hot (no AC). We felt like we were filling out a loan application and taking a college final just to sign up and get certified for the first time.
The gym itself was quite a bit smaller than we expected, although the routes seem expertly placed. Also, the prices for 1-day and rentals were alright but we were not impressed by the membership prices. We would frankly prefer to pay more to have a nicer, cleaner, climate-controlled gym. Unfortunately, in close proximity, we're not sure we have any alternative.
Fun for all ages!

We tried out the Rock Gym a few years ago and for various reasons didn't go back for awhile. However, we recently returned and have been going back all of the time! This place is a ton of fun for all ages, and everyone from beginners to advanced level climbers can enjoy it here. As others have noted the outside of the building is deceivingly plain - the inside is definitely well worth it though. Make sure if you bring anyone underage they have an adult to sign the waivers for them - we almost got stuck that way before. Great for parties also - the kids love it!
