Frank W. Cox High School Reviews

We recently moved to Va from Illinois. Initially my daughter struggled because the grading was different, and the work was harder. She actually had homework! Since my daughter started attending Cox she has felt challenged and as though she is really learning. She comes home daily telling me something that she has learned. Not only is she challenged academically, but she has also enjoyed being involved with the track team. Cox is extremely competitive, but I don't think of that as a negative. Although my daughter is a freshman this year she is really thinking about where she wants to be after graduation, and working toward that goal; using Cox as a springboard toward her future successes. I have also found the teachers to be extremely helpful and giving of their time. I look forward to her next three years at Cox because I KNOW she will get an awesome education!

This school has great test scores so the teachers are obviously doing there work. Their fine arts program is amzazing as well. The academic program at Cox is by far the best in the area. The only problem with this school is the amount of student drug use. Being a student I know this. It's amazing how well the scores are there.

The academic program at Cox is by far the best in the area. The teachers are absolutely amazing and challenge students here more than any other high school in the city. Although students do have money, it's just as easy for kids to find drugs as it is at any other high school in the area. Cox High is a public school with a private school education. The principal is making a lot of discipline changes and is making it harder for inappropriate things to happen on school grounds. He has taken the stand of punishment on the first offense and not taking students breaking the rules. Cox has the best test scores is ranked in the top 200 schools in the Nation. Cox also has the best coaches, SCA, and extracurriculars. Student involvement is amazing.

As a student at cox i can say that its a good school when it comes to education. When it come to safty and discipline i would have to say that its on the low side of the chart. As many know coxs has a bad rep for drug many hate to amit to it but its true i see it everyday. If a parent ask me if I think they should let there child go to cox i would say no.

The teachers are very dedicated here. They do everything in their power to help you. Theres many different clubs and sports that you can get involved in. There are a lot of drugs around the area and in the school. Its a very wealthy area and these kids have money to spend. As a student that currently goes there (moved here at the beginning of the year), I was shocked in the amount of drug activity and money around here. Keep an eye on your kids, and pay attention to the friends they make. Other then that I was impressed with the quality of the school.

As a parent of a current Cox student, I am pleased with the overall academic programs. I do also see the 'cliques' in the student body as well as the parents. My child has been involved in the Crew Club since 9th grade. It has been a wonderful experience. There is so much practice (fall & spring)and conditioning (winter) that I am not concerned with the drugs. My child has many good friends in crew and outside of crew as well. Parent involvement in crew is outstanding. The club could not survive as well as they have without the parents. It is very important for students to become involved in activities/sports in high school.

I found both of the reviews I read to be on the mark. As a graduate of Cox I would like to confirm that there are indeed a lot of drugs being passed around the halls. The parent who said that there is money at Cox is absolutley correct. A look at the parking lot will show students driving nicer cars than the faculty. I do think I got a great education though, and currently hold a 3.6 GPA at a private univeristy in my junior year. At a minimum I was prepared to further my education and have found that I was ahead of my peer group when it came to use of English Language Skills and Mathmatics. If your child is transfering in to Cox be prepared to encounter cliques in the student body as well as with the parents. Be prepared for classism and a 'locals only' attitude.

I have had children at Cox High School for the past 7 years. Being military we've experienced school systems in California and overseas and by comparison Virginia Beach City Public Schools are very conservative and narrow minded. Family life education is 'laughable' and a waste of taxpayer money and students time! Large numbers of parents of current students are alumni of Cox H.S., have tight cliques and control the social and volunteer committees. On the up side - the German (Herr Becker)and Spanish language programs are fabulous. Mr. Yano (English) is spectacular and truely teaches critical thinking skills! Mrs. Roy (A.P. European history) managed to 'hook' my, then, 11th grader on history!

Cox is an excellent school as far as scholastics but be sure to watch your child's after school social activities. Most kids at Cox have wealthy parents and have the means to support their drug addictions. It is a known fact Cox has more kids arrested for underage drinking and drug related arrests so beware of who your child befriends. The best clubs to join are Key club and any Drama related activity. The sports departments are awesome and being a past gymnast I loved Coach H.
